DEECA (Department of Emergency Events and Crisis Assistance) is a government agency that brings together Victoria’s energy, environment, water, agriculture, forestry, resources, climate action, and emergency management functions into a single department to maximise connections between the environment, community, industry, and economy.
The Department holds various responsibilities for the management of public land and natural resources including the prevention and suppression of bushfire in Victoria’s National Parks, State Forests and Protected Public Land covering approximately one third of the state.
Each year, during the fire danger period the Department employs approximately 200 additional staff to complement its fire fighting force of approximately 1,500 people.
About the role
GBS Recruitment is a trusted partner of DEECA to provide Labour Hire Services and is currently recruiting Casual Emergency Services Support Staff across the Western Victoria Region. Roles may include Forklift Drivers, Tradespeople, General Labourers, Kitchen Hands, and potentially Supervisors and/or Team Leaders. These essential roles are integral to effective emergency response efforts.
Casual roles currently available for the 2024 / 2025 fire season may include duties such as:
General Labourers:
- Setting up campsites
- Organising inventory of clothing and stock
- Re-fuelling vehicles
- Other related tasks
- Assisting suppliers in the catering department with food preparation
- Providing meals for emergency services workers
- General kitchen tasks
- Responsible for managing logistics, including the safe and efficient movement, loading, and unloading of materials and equipment within the camp or worksite.
- Focused on maintaining and repairing camp infrastructure, ensuring all facilities and equipment are functioning effectively and meet safety standards.
- Oversee daily base camp operations, ensuring smooth and efficient workflows.
- Manage and coordinate personnel, including assigning tasks and monitoring performance.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and procedures across all activities.
- Act as the primary point of contact for senior management and external agencies, facilitating clear communication and coordination.
IMPORTANT: These opportunities will only be available in the event of a significant natural disaster occurring in the Gippsland Region. As a support worker, you will not be tasked with firefighting or any other frontline duties.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates need to be fully onboarded prior to deployment and must be available for an immediate start as work can occur at short notice.
To be eligible for this work, you will:
- Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen with a valid passport (evidence required)
- Be physically fit and work ready (repetitive manual handling tasks involved)
- Hold a current National Police Check or be able to successfully pass one via GBS Recruitment
- Hold a current Drivers’ Licence
- Hold current Qualifications and/or Licences to undertake works or operate plant and equipment (Forklift Operators and Tradespeople roles only)
- Complete a GBS Online Induction
